1. Excessive Machine Load and Material Buildup

One of the fastest ways to overheat your pellet machine is by pushing it beyond its capacity. When you feed material too quickly, it accumulates in the pelletizing chamber faster than the machine can process it. This material buildup creates intense friction and resistance as components struggle to compress the excess biomass.

The solution is simple: slow down your feed rate. Start with a reduced feed speed and gradually increase it until the machine reaches its optimal operating temperature. This controlled approach prevents material from backing up in the chamber and allows the machine to process biomass efficiently without overheating.

2. Insufficient Lubrication of Critical Components

Your pellet machine contains multiple moving parts that generate significant friction during operation. The bearings, in particular, require proper lubrication to function smoothly. Without adequate lubrication, these metal components grind against each other, creating excessive friction heat that quickly spreads throughout the machine.

Regular maintenance is your best defense. Establish a consistent lubrication schedule using high-temperature, industrial-grade lubricants specified by your machine's manufacturer. 3. High Moisture Content in Raw Materials

Wet raw materials are a common but often overlooked cause of pellet machine overheating. When biomass contains too much moisture, the water creates steam and pressure as it heats during compression. This steam gets trapped in the material, increasing internal pressure and temperature. The additional moisture also makes the material harder to compress, forcing the machine to work harder and generate more heat.

Always pre-dry your materials to the optimal moisture range - typically between 10% and 15% for most wood types. Using a moisture meter to check your materials before processing can prevent this problem. Proper drying ensures smoother operation and prevents the temperature spikes caused by excess moisture.

4. Wrong Die Compression Ratio

The compression ratio of your pellet machine die must match your specific material type. When you use a die with too high a compression ratio, the material undergoes excessive compression as it passes through the die holes. This over-compression creates tremendous friction and resistance, generating intense heat that can damage both your materials and your equipment.

Choose a die with the appropriate compression ratio for your material's characteristics. Softer materials generally require lower compression ratios, while harder materials can handle higher ratios. Consulting with your die manufacturer or equipment supplier can help you select the right die specification for your specific application, preventing unnecessary heat buildup.
